While Cali has been a recent hotspot for emerging artists, none of them have as much of the hardworking and blue collar feel as young artist Tru Money. Not only does he make high quality music, he also founded and manages his own record label for like minded artists - this kind of entrepreneurship and commitment to the grind is what sets him apart, and you can hear it through his verses. When he raps about grinding to the top, you know it’s legit. A lot of rappers flex things they don’t have, or lie about how hard they’re working, but you can see Tru Money’s dedication to the craft right before your eyes. This lends his music a credibility and respectability that many underground rappers struggle to achieve - every bar about the struggles he’s been through and how he’s made progress towards the life every young rapper dreams about is straight from his real life. His music has a gritty feel, not disguised by autotune and reverb or prodution tricks. It’s just Tru Money and the beat, and this setting allow for his natural charisma and energy to be on full display. With a voice that sounds like a combination of Chris Webby and Yelawolf, the way he slides over beats stands out as his top talent.
Though he doesn’t have a full length project out yet, his dozens of singles and ‘Tru Life’ EP are more than enough discography to dive into. On tracks like ‘Rush’, he has a menacing and intense energy, while he also can get more chill on tracks like ‘Summer Rain’, while still keeping his steely edge. This stylistic diversity helps a playthrough of his music stay fresh. Each track uses a similar production style, a series of tough yet slick trap instrumentals that he can glide over - just like his delivery, a rough voice with a a smooth flow, his beats are both hard and gritty while being catchy and mainstream. Like we mentioned above, his honest and straightforward lyricism is supported by his real life grind, and when you combine his bars with his delivery and flow over that quality production, you get guaranteed bangers that can’t miss.
