When you think of iconic hiphop groups like the Wu-Tang Clan and NWA, you might most remember their lyricism, storytelling, or technical ability. However something often overlooked, yet at the core of any successful artist or group, is personality - each of the roughly dozen members associated with the organization brings to the table a unique spin on what it means to be a Dallas music vet. The ways they present themselves to the world through both their writing and delivery unveil a series of complex, creatives lives that come together to form music that manages to be consistently enjoyable while also frequently presenting quality messages. From DH OFFICIAL’s swaggering, hard-hitting melodies to LB Swan’s infectious rhythm and a dozen other artists’ unique attributes, Southern Super Friends has made it clear why they’ve been a standout name in the Dallas rap scene for the last few years.

Though their charisma is one of their most noteworthy accomplishments, I do want to make it clear that technical ability is not something that the Southern Super Friends lack - each artist, most notably DH OFFICIAL and Rolang Medici, have proven time and time again that they are capable of deft and precise flows. On tracks like ‘Landaulet’, DH, LB Swan, and Zypherman G weave in and out, moving through the beat and each other. They flex their abilities while crafting one of the hardest tracks on the project, and show that they can back up their strong personalities with lyrical talent.

Their newest project, Freeze Warning II, continues their trend of dominance and consistent quality. Coming in at 10 tracks and running 32 minutes, the project is largely an energetic and upbeat effort. However the final track, ‘Pluto Return’ starring DH OFFICIAL and LB Swan, slows the pace down with an “All Falls Down” sampling instrumental. The relaxed yet cohesive production lends itself to a chill vibe, but the ever-present lyricism is as powerful as always. With direct and clear bars about the grind and effort put in to reach the top, the lowkey energy is counterbalanced by their strong messaging. Another standout track is ‘Freeze Warning pt. 2’ featuring DH OFFICIAL, Roland Medici, $mooth Jeff, Dommii-San, and Yung Link. With clever bars and writing that sticks in your head as well as upbeat and playful deliveries and a hard-hitting trap instrumental, this has come to be our favorite Southern Super Friends track. It’s the perfect selection for the project’s title track, and perfectly spotlights the talent found within the group. Many of the verses stand out and show off the abilities of the often under-represented SSF artists like the incredible $mooth Jeff and Yung Link. Each of these artists deliver some of the best verses of the entire project, and SSF’s discography, anchored by a solid hook from DH OFFICIAL and a fantastic opening verse from the standout Rolang Medici.

One thing that stood out about the project is the fact that it is impressively cohesive for a collaborative effort that varies in contributors and styles. Each track is unique and fresh, yet they all convey the Southern Super Friends brand. Each meets the high standard of quality and demonstrates a careful attention paid to branding and portrayal. Their consistent humor and lyricism woven through a melodic trap sound results in a work of art that encapsulates the entirety of the Dallas music scene into ten songs.

Overall, this project was very solid, with each artist contributing and working to perfect a great final product. Below, we’ve given some awards to highlight standout tracks and artists:

The Future:

Each Southern Super Friends artist has work completed or in-progress outside of the group, such as DH OFFICIAL’s phenomenal ‘Meanwhile…’ and LB Swan’s ‘StrpClbLuvStori’. Moving forward, the group will continue to drop bangers both as a team and on their own, as well as continue expanding their reach beyond rap, and hiphop in general, with associated Medici Capital and the SouthernSuperFriends enterprises.
