While lyrics, flow, and production are all obviously key for any artist to find success, an often overlooked quality is personality. If you want to stand out and set yourself apart from everyone around you, the best way to do that is by crafting a unique charismatic personality that shines through your music. One of the best examples of that in the underground scene is 40OzDai, an artist I’ve known and worked with for a long time. He’s consistently been able to show off his energetic and wild personality through each of his many projects, and today we brought him on the site to show you what makes him so special. (Everything below is directly quoted from our interview with 40).
How do you feel you’ve changed the game? What impact have you had?
I feel like my style inspires others. My uniqueness and ability to be myself is carried through my music. My sound isn’t one sound or style, I have multiple flows, cadences , pitches , approaches to a beat and I think that inspires other artist. The authenticity and diversity in my art makes people want to experiment more with their art. Which is my goal I want everyone in life to be fully comfortable Being themselves so I’m all for it. You can just hear it in my flows , topics , adlibs. The energy and mind behind my art is rare. I impact everyone I encounter just because I’m so free and sure of who I am. I know my purpose and you can hear that in the music, I know I’m great so I have to go out and achieve this greatness I know I am. You can hear the talent and sureness in the music, to where you’d think I was rich already of music.
What is a valuable lesson young artists need to learn?
Young artist need to learn the lesson of time and patience , I was “ supposed “ to blow up at a certain time back home (Milwaukee , Wi) but some shit happened and I had to move and couldn’t make music for a while. Lost my fanbase and all the blog support I had. Through this time though I’ve been polishing my sound, style and image. And have grown as a person, learned so much more about life. Patience is key, everything will come when it’s ready for you, not when you think you’re ready for it. Take as much time to better yourself as you can, your not as ready as you think.
What’s the most fun part of making music for you? Least fun?
The best part or most fun about making music is making the art. Painting that canvas, putting my flare or touch on something. Making a great song out of nothing. Creating a vibe. It’s the best feeling every, just getting that energy captured in music You can always go back to and relive , or give emotion to people. It’s beautiful. The worst part of it is sometimes not getting enough attention for your art or having to wait on other people to finish your work, and you have no control on when they finish your mix, your cover art or video etc.
What’s the message behind your music?
The message behind my music is to always strive to be higher than most. Be the best you , you can be. Live the life you want. Be yourself. Don’t take no for an answer , find your purpose and go live your truth. Your imagination is your reality.
Is there a specific vibe or emotion you try to craft on each project?
I actually never really recorded a project as an idea. I just record a lot of music and put projects together off how they sound together or what the topic is. I go off the beat and how the beat makes me feel, any beat I’ve rapped on has talked to me in someway. Gave me some type of emotion, energy. It gave me something to respond. That’s how I know I like a beat, if I just start rapping or it catches my emotions and energy.
What projects are you currently working on?
I’m currently recording as I’m typing this out actually. I’m working on a collab mixtape “lords of the night 2” featuring Jay Thomas , y’all should check him out too . That’s my twin, he go wild. This past week I decided to make a project “live galore” or “lord galore” it’ll be our middle of January. Both of those will. I got videos and shit coming too. I’m honestly a workaholic in the studio, I make at least 20 songs a week, minimum. I got over 10 projects ready. It’s all about getting the right vibe out at the right time. My brother Jay Musa just dropped a project featuring me too, go check that out. That’s HtM - higher than most, my collective and clothing brand. Tap in with that too!
How has your brand changed and grown over your career?
I feel like my brand has just grown and enhanced , I’ve always been this unique artist. I’ve always been into fashion, drugs, the women, partying the cliche rockstar life I’ve been living since 15. I think I’ve been more just solidifying my image. I’ve always looked like a rockstar , and embraced being different. I’m really just being myself.
Between his interview and his music, you can really get a feel for exactly the type of charisma 40OzDai brings to the table. His message to any young artist or creative out there: “Be yourself. Rage . Live life. Go crazy. Read a book and study the game. Respect the music it’s a form of art and spread love forever and always. Also live galore & higher than most.” 40 also runs a successful clothing brand, Higher Than Most, and continues to build up his personal brand and persona. One thing so many young artists fail to do is establish a recognizable personality - people need to be fans of the artist behind the music, not just the music itself, and having a fun and interesting personality will make you much more memorable both in and outta the booth.
